About Lexxica

Background

Research has shown that independent understanding of language becomes possible only when at least 19 out of every 20 words of the text are known to the reader. Another way of saying 19 out of 20 words is to say 95 percent coverage. The 95 percent coverage threshold applies to both general language and to the special vocabulary of different careers and personal interests. A detailed analysis of language use reveals that only a tiny fraction of all vocabulary is actually required to achieve 95 percent comprehension. The problem is that there are hundreds of thousands of words in every major language and individual needs range from beginners studying foreign languages to highly proficient natives seeking specialized vocabulary in specific subjects.

Lexxica's Mission

The Word Engine was created for people to measure known vocabulary and rapidly acquire important unknown vocabulary in their areas of interest. Lexxica supports pathways and networks that provide people with rich and meaningful communicative experiences. Lexxica encourages all learners, teachers and researchers to use the Word Engine programs to help increase knowledge, ability, and mutual understanding. Lexxica founders Dr. Charles Browne and Guy Cihi have created and sponsored the Barrier-Free Vocabulary Project to help people around the world acquire full 95 percent coverage of general English using the free Word Engine program.
